Gaming and your Brain

Published by beamer at 10:37 pm under Video games Edit This

As most people have concluded up to this point in the history of gaming, video games are bad for your health. They are bad for your health when you play them too much, for too long, or when they are what you obsess about. However, a moderate amount of video games can actually be good for your brain in studies done in recent years there have been many reports about the harmful effects of video games, http://www.geocities.com/frankie_meehan/ComputerGames.htm

One site that I found to be very anti-game, but also very well presented reasoning for such was http://www.videogameaddiction.net. There are two sides to the video game aspect though the site http://discovermagazine.com/2005/jul/brain-on-video-games, supports the other half of the story.

I believe that if a person plays video games for more than two hours a day than they are pushing it. I have play video games for many hours at a time however, but I have also slowly started to pay for it. I have developed a need for glasses due to strain on my eyes. I have started to joint and muscle pain from play video games too often. However, I have also gone months at a time without even laying my eyes on a computer or a console. During those times I took up camping road trips having fun with my friends, volunteering, and falling in love, some things will never be experienced by some people that have become enthralled with the love to play games such as World of Warcraft, and other games that are widely known for being addictive.

The one thing that I have come to realize though is that as a young adult, my generation takes not only the world for granted, and others for granted, but their bodies, and their time. I have found that when I am most likely to go on a binge of gaming and button mashing, it is usually because of some depressing factor in my life, such as debts, or emotional strain. The problem with that is how a game affects me. I stop caring about the outside world and I let all my problems just build up until I have to leave my computer or my console and face them. It is a vicious cycle however, because one who does this will never get out of it until they start to use their time wisely.

On the lighter side of things, I am also an idealist, and I believe that all things should come in moderation, in order to be happy. So I have no problem with myself or any other person playing video games as long as the game isn’t controlling your thinking patterns, and consuming your life.

I would like to open my blog up to replies and even critique when I have posted this.

So, I believe that you do need at least moderation to be happy, but why not emphasize the deletion as a whole of gaming as a part of your life? Don’t you think that there should be some kind of way to experience life as it was intended, besides video games?
